WHAT IS OZONE?
Ozone is a chemical compound consisting of three oxygen atoms (O3). Ozone has a structure carrying a much higher energy compared to normal atmospheric oxygen (O2) generally found in atmosphere as diatomic. Ozone is a a source of atmosphere and the high-energy state of oxygen. The importance of ozone, the source of the blue color of the sky, for the life on earth has been proven by scientific research conducted in recent years.
Ozone, an indispensable element for the world, also attains a much more important place in the world of medicine day by day. Successful results are achieved in the treatment of many diseases from cancer to diabetes and high blood pressure to kidney diseases. The ozone gas used in the treatment process is generated from pure oxygen in the medical ozone generators. The ozone generated is always used along with oxygen in the treatment process. All of the ozone therapy methods are intended to apply ozone to the patient in a reliable and harmless manner. The physician administering the treatment, selects the method which is appropriate and necessary for the patient thanks to his/her information and experience. Ozone therapy has a wide field of application more than any other drug has. The ozone therapy with no side effects can be applied safely to anyone. Since it has no side effects, it does not interact with any other medicine. For this reason, ozone therapy is being administered successfully as a quite practical and useful natural treatment method.
Ozone shows some differences in terms of the normal atmospheric combination of oxygen. The ozone gas which is colorless at room temperature has a
characteristic odor. After a stormy weather, it smells in high places or on the sea shore. Due to this characteristic of ozone, its name originates from a Greek word “ozein” which means “smell” in Greek. The ozone discovered by the German chemist Christian Friedrich (1799-1868) in 1840, is found in the places close to sea level in smoke form in a particle O3 (= 0.1 ppm = 200 µg/m³) concentrations per 10 million air particles. It decreases as altitude increases. For instance, it decreases to 0.03 – 0.04 ppm levels at an altitude of 2000 meters. It has a very strong oxidizing feature. It is an effective disinfecting agent. Thanks to its effective disinfection feature, it is used safely in the water treatment facilities all over the world in order to kill germs in the drinking water.
The ozone treatment has medical legality (validity) in 16 countries over the world. This therapy is also approved by health ministries of variou
s countries. (Cuba, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria etc.) Its intra-articular and intralumbar use among its local modes of administration is approved by Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and has entered into the tariff list of TTB.
WITH WHICH METHODS IS OZONE THERAPY APPLIED?
Ozone therapy is not an “Alternative Medicine” but an effective treatment method whose effectiveness is proven by hundreds of scientific works. There are numerous evidences that ozone therapy or “blood washing” in the words of Germans is used in the treatment of many diseases. The most important feature of ozone therapy that it can be applied to the body through different ways peculiar to patient and disease.
Major Method: Through this very common method, 50-200 ml of blood is drawn from the patient and injected back to the patient after mixed with a certain dose of ozone.
Minor Method: 2-5 cc of blood drawn from the patient is injected intramuscularly after being mixed with ozone at a specified dose.
Subcutaneous: The ozone gas in a certain dose and volume is given through subcutaneous injection by means of a fine-tipped needle.
Giving ozone gas into body cavities: Ozone is given through by rectal route (through anus) or into the vaginal and auditory canal by spraying.
Intra-articular use of ozone gas: In joint discomforts, a certain dose of ozone gas is given into the joint by means of a suitable needle.
Use of ozonated products: This is the external application of ozonated fluids such as ozonated water and ozonated oil.
Ozone application inside or around a bulk or lesion:
Ozone sauna applications: This is a method in which ozone is absorbed by the skin in a steamy environment following the hydration of skin by increasing transdermal and heat.
One and/or more of these applications are selected according to the patient or disease.
HISTORICAL CHRONOLOGY OF OZONE THERAPY
The presence of ozone was set forth for the first time in the world by Martinus van Marum (1750 – 1837) in 1785. However, Martinus Van Marum did not know that what he found was ozone. Marum who was conducting studies on electricity power, was carrying out experiments on high electric current along with John Cuthbertson (1743 – 1821). In the meanwhile, they remarked that there formed a smell and a very light blue gas in the air. They thought that this may be a kind of electricity smell.
Ozone gas was proved and identified for the first time in 1840 by German chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein (1799 – 1868) who lived in Switzerland. He also gave it the name “ozein” which means “odor”, “to smell” in Greek language.
In 1856, the germicidal effect of ozone was found and they started to use ozone for disinfection of instruments used for the patients.
In 1857, Wener von Siemens carried out studies on ozone-generating generators.

- Oxidizes adrenaline and provides a general calmness.
- Reduces your need for sleep and increases the quality of your sleep.
Ozone therapy has numerous benefits that writing all of them is almost impossible since its effects on the disease within its field of treatment would be too long to write. Indicated effects results from ozone therapy applications for some kind of discomforts and for detoxification purposes.
In addition to the other symptoms encountered in arterial circulatory disorders, coldness felt in the legs and the pain in the foot after a short walk are the alarm symptoms. This case constitutes very important indications for ozone therapy for 40 years. The success of ozone therapy in the circulatory disorders has been proven by many medical studies. Ozone may also be used along with the conventional therapy or as a complementary treatment.
Prevention and treatment in older persons
Elderly people respond well to the ozone therapy. In addition to all clinical advantages, it ensures a better utilization of oxygen by tissues, stimulates the immune system and activates body’s own antioxidants and cells fighting against free radicals. Furthermore, it has positive effects on the circulatory disorders in the brain. In these cases, the patient feels a decrease in physical performance as well as a difficulty in walking and dizziness. In addition to the complementary treatment, ozone therapy is also used in order to improve quality of life.
Ozone treatment in eye diseases
Age-related circulatory disorders also affects the eyes along with atrophic and degenerative changes. For instance, at the point where visual focus is the sharpest, the spots occurring due to senile macular degeneration in the center of the retina become effective at varying degrees leading to optic nerve atrophy. In clinical studies carried out at the University of Siena, there have been improvements in vision within 6-8 months following the ozone otohemotrans fusion. In the subsequent phases of the treatment, they observed an increase in visual performance and determined that the deterioration was stopped.
Cancer and ozone therapy in cancer
Ozone therapy is quite successful as a complementary therapy in cancer patients. There, it is used at low doses in the activation of ozone immune system (immune system). The immune cells such as lymphocytes, helper and suppressor cells, lymphocytes and natural killer cells (killer cells), become activated through the biological reactions launched by ozone in order to generate precursor proteins including interferon called cytokines. Actually, ozone enables body to generate its own interferon and interleukins in increased amounts. By giving the ozonized blood to the patient, an immune reaction increasing positively, is started. This also contributes to increase the body’s overall strength and fitness.
Skin fungi and infected skin lesions
The fungicide and germicidal properties of the ozone was used successfully in the purification of drinking water for 100 years. These properties makes the medical ozone a very effective treatment agent in counteracting against persistent skin molds and fungi such as bacterial infection of the feet, fungal infections of the body and mucous membranes of the fungal/mycotic infections.
The local treatment of infected wounds such as open bedsores (decubitus ulcers), ulcers of the lower leg (ulcuscruris), non-healing wounds of the diabetic patients and gangrene, are the processes in the classical application areas of medical ozone. In such processes, the disinfectant, in other words bactericidal and fungicidal properties of ozone are exploited in order to obtain sterilized and clean wounds. Subsequent to cleaning the wound, the healing process is accelerated by applying low dose of ozone.
Intestinal Disease: proctitis and colitis
The local application of Ozone gas in the form of blowing by rectal route especially in the early stages of inflammatory intestinal diseases has proven to be very useful. In many cases, 10 consecutive sessions of ozone application would be sufficient. In the proctitis clinical studies performed on 248 patients, 90% of patients recuperated after 10 sessions while only 10% of them required several 10-session applications.
Diseases caused by viruses
Herpes simplex (facial herpes), herpes zoster (shingles)
Both types of herpes are caused by viruses. Lip herpes (herpeslabialis) is often repetitive and unpleasant disease and treated very successfully with a combination of ozone along with other medical methods.
A complementary treatment of ozone for herpeszost or shingles is helpful and they may be treated in two different ways such as ozonated water compresses and ozonated blood transfusion.
Liver inflammation (Hepatitis A, B, C)
Inflammation of the liver is among the classical treatment of medical ozone. While it is possible to completely cure Hepatitis A (HVA = hepatitisvirus A) the other form of the virus, hepatitis B (HBV = hepatitisvirus B), often progresses chronically. At this point, in addition to conventional methods of medical treatment, successful results were obtained by ozonated blood transfusion or giving ozone/oxygen gas by rectal route in a controlled manner. The same methods applies to hepatitis C whose sitting process is perennial and which cannot be diagnosed as a liver disease until it becomes chronic.
Inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases
When we divide inflammatory joint diseases into three phases, especially the stage 1 and 2, in other words the stages without severe bone deformation responds to medical ozone application. Knee osteoarthritis (knee inflammation) or active arthritic form in the knee and shoulder joints are included in the class responding to the treatment. In such cases additionally to the standard medical methods – specific exercise therapies -, intra-articular injection of ozone is successfully applied. As well as its properties of strengthening the immune system and activating cartilage metabolism, we completely benefit from anti-inflammatory properties of the ozone.
Arthritic/Rheumatic Conditions – Chronic Polyarthritis
Arthritic/rheumatic conditions covers disease many painful diseases related to skeletal or muscular system which can also lead to the limitation of functions. In general, application of medical ozone in such cases is used for complementary purposes along with physical therapy. In the studies conducted on rheumatoid arthritis (chronic polyarthritis), ozone major autohaemotherapy is found successful in non-acute cases. The effect of it we use at this point is its anti-inflammatory effect.
Anti-aging (aging backwards) and revival
The general well-being given by ozone through metabolic activation of red and white blood cells gives people a sense of renewal. Work-related stress and intense pace of work as well as mental and physical fatigue is effectively cleared up with ozone therapy (O3). Professional sportsmen and women benefit greatly from this treatment. Ozone increases the physical endurance.
